Cacao is a tile-placement game in which you are a chief of a cacao (chocolate bean) farming village in South America. You are competing against up to 3 other villages, to produce the most beans, sell them, and have the most gold by the end of the match. Similar to the game Carcassonne, players will be earning gold/points each turn (selling beans and working gold mines) and at the end of the game (calculating water supply and temple points).

Quick Setup
– Players pick their color, and take their appropriate meeple, village board and worker tiles
– Players shuffle their worker tiles and then draw a hand of 3:
– The Host shuffles the Jungle tiles, places it in a pile and places 2 faceup
– The Host places a single cacao field and a 2-coin market in this position:

Players take turns placing one tile from their hand at a time.

A Jungle tile may not touch another Jungle tile, and vice versa for the Worker tiles.
There may be situations in which 2 Jungle tiles needs to be placed. In this situation, the player chooses one from the face-up Jungle tiles, and then takes a Jungle tile from the face-down pile.

Sun (Worshiping Site) tiles gives the player the ability to place their Worker tile on an existing owned (cannot put on opponent’s Worker tiles) Worker tile on the board. All workers on this tile makes an action; this is the only time in which a Jungle tile does not need to be discovered (to trigger gathering).


There are 4 ways to earn gold in the game:

Selling beans in the market
Earning gold directly from the gold mine
Having the most reputation at the Temple
Having a village with an ample supply of water
Having extra Sun (Worshiping Site) tiles at the end of the game

Each turn, you place a tile from your hand (of 3 tiles) which represents your scouts/workers:

If a newly placed scout tile causes an empty Jungle space to be bordered by 2 or more Scout (whether friendly or opponent) tiles, that Jungle space is filled:
Workers adjacent to this new Jungle tile gathers/interacts with this tile. When you run out of villagers (worker tiles), the game is over and each village calculates the amount of gold they possess.

The different kinds of Jungle tiles and what they do:
– gives either 1 or 2 beans per worker (symbol) interacting with it
– a village cannot store more than 5 beans, any additional beans are wasted

– earn 2/3/4 gold per bean; each worker interacting with the Market is able to sell 1 bean
Gold Mine
– earn 1 or 2 gold per worker interacting with it

– move the Meeple on the village board forward for each worker interacting with the Water tile

Sun Worshiping Site
– earn 1 sun token for each worker interacting with it
– a village cannot store more than 3 sun tokens at a time, any additional sun tokens are wasted

– coins are calculated at the end of the game
– the player with the most workers interacting with the Temple earns 6 gold
– the player with the second-most workers earns 3 gold
– in the case of any ties, players split the gold amount rounded down
