There is nothing worse than reading an article where the author constantly uses obscure words that would cause the reader’s eyes to glaze over. This author used three of them that I had absolutely no idea what they meant, two of them in one sentence even:

The leaders of the developed world gathered for what promised from the outset to be a weekend of invective and calumny

– insulting, abusive, or highly critical language

– the making of false and defamatory statements about someone in order to damage their reputation

A little backstory for those living under a rock: there was a G7 gathering about two weeks ago in Quebec, Canada, where the world leaders of the most industrialized countries got together to discuss economic strategies. Donald Trump was a target of ire due to his sabre rattling and constant threats of tariffs on traditional global allies. Because of these aggressive moves, Donald Trump was hesitant to join these gatherings because it was expected that the world leaders would gang up on him on how he was damaging the relationship through his economic diplomacy tactics.

…assembled for their family photo and mugged for the cameras at photo-ops and preprandial gatherings.”

– an adjective to describe something done before dinner or lunch
